Weight Control

Weight issues are very much tied up with the emotions and it would seem that many people tend to eat more than their body wants or needs as they get older.

Generally if the average person ate a balanced healthy diet and took regular exercise she/he should be able to maintain their ideal body weight.

Many people eat between meals if they are bored, lonely, need a break etc.  This pattern of behaviour then becomes a habit which is difficult to break because people then feel they need those snacks to sustain themselves. Being overweight can make a lot of people feel very tired and lethargic and less inclined to take exercise.   As the weight goes on many people find they feel uncomfortable and guilty.  They then find their clothes don’t fit and they need to go up a size and it is very easy to get into a negative state of mind.

Hypnotherapy can help you break that pattern of behaviour and that longstanding association with food.  Through hypnosis you will get the motivation to eat more healthily, eat less but enjoy it more.  You feel motivated to take more exercise and drink more water.

At Candela, the weight loss through hypnosis programme is based on giving the client a greater sense of well-being, self-confidence and a good self-image.  The client is then encouraged to work towards the good self-image, always seeing themselves as being their ideal size and ideal weight, therefore only eating for a person of that size.  You will feel happier and more positive because you will be progressing towards a new way of life and achieving your goals.

Smoking Cessation & Habit Breaking

It is known that hypnotherapy is very successful in helping people break the smoking habit.

Smoking is not just an addiction to nicotine but an addiction to the habit. Hypnotherapy will help you break those associations and habit patterns IF you are really ready to stop. 94% of clients who use hypnosis and are committed to stop smoking  DO give up.

Over the years that people smoke, the feeling that they can not do day-to-day things, like have a tea or coffee, or a drink, make a phone call or a decision without a cigarette is compounded over and over with every cigarette they smoke.

Hypnosis will give you the understanding, the confidence and motivation and the self-belief that you need to break the habit pattern.

Sue uses very motivational hypnosis with her clients. She helps them turn their problems into goals.

Hypnotherapy can help you to change your way of doing things and seeing things.  It will help you turn all the time and mental and physical energy you have spent in the past on smoking, into an  ability to achieve new things in your life with a positive outlook.

Sue has a very high success rate with those of her clients who want to give up smoking.

Her husband died of lung cancer and it is very clear to her that there are no benefits in smoking but many many in giving up.

Relationship, Sexual & Emotional Issues

Hypnotherapy can be beneficial and therapeutic for many relationship and sexual issues.  For many of us a warm and loving relationship is the key to a happy and successful life.

Discussing feelings and sexual desires or inhibitions can sometimes be difficult but through hypnosis a client can explore their inner minds and may recall incidents from the past that will help them to understand themselves better.  It is not always necessary for their therapist to know  the details.

The underlying theme of hypnotherapy is to empower the client and to give them a greater feeling of confidence, calmness and relaxation in every area of their life.  This could mean that not only might they be successful and happy at work but also in their love life, the family life and their social life.

The feelings of success motivation and well-being can be anchored in the client by encouraging them to see their strengths and positive attributes.  Hypnotherapy will instil in a person a great feeling of self-worth, self-belief and self-esteem which will give them greater confidence in their relationships.

The therapy can also involve the client’s partner if it is thought this this would be beneficial to the relationship.

Issues that can be helped include: Impotence, Premature Ejaculation and Vaginismus.

Regression & Past Life Regression

REGRESSION

Regression is used a lot in hypnotherapy to help clients go back through their own present lives in order to heal inner conflicts and fears.

This may be done, by encouraging the client to journey back through his/her life to a time when a problem, a fear or a phobia first started.  They will then be encouraged to relive the feelings that they experienced then and get those feelings into perspective by thinking about how they would deal with them in the present time.

Regression is often known as hypno-analysis and is very powerful and therapeutic.

PAST LIFE REGRESSION

Past Life Regression intrigues most of us by the stories we have heard or read about, when a person can be regressed to another time in history and take on the personality and knowledge of another character.  Often the facts given by the past life character will be very detailed and seemingly accurate and there is no explanation as to how or why the hypnotic subject would have that information.

There is no way of proving whether the past lives are real unless they have researchable features.  Even if it is only considered that the past lives are symbolic the life that is experienced will take on an emotional reality that  allows the healing of the presenting issues to take place.

Often what the client sees in a past life is like a parallel of what is happening for them in this life.

It is an extremely good therapy for clients who feel that they are drawn  into unwanted patterns of behaviour or relationships.

The work done in Past Life Regression can be very profound and moving for the client and will have a lasting impact that can facilitate

Phobias

Many people suffer from phobias and fears. We are all born with two basic fears – the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises.

These are built into our self-preservation instinct and keep us safe.  As we grow up some of us develop other fears, which can seem irrational and disproportionate to our general way of thinking and approach to life.   These fears could be fears of birds or animals or insects, they could be fears of heights or darkness, they could be fears of hospitals, needles, exams or fears of driving or flying  or large shopping malls.

There may not be any obvious or apparent reason for these fears, but they can control our everyday lives and stop us being able to enjoy life and relaxing with other people.  Many people get embarrassed about their fears or they dread the feelings they get if they have to address those fears in public.  This is known as the ‘fear of fear’, which can be worse than the fear itself.

Hypnotherapy can provide extremely effective help for fears and phobias because the underlying theme of hypnosis is calmness confidence and relaxation.  It can teach you how to relax and face up to the fear in a confidence and calm way.

Through hypnosis you take yourself back to the time when the phobia/fear first developed and get it into perspective and proportion, and then teach yourself to respond in a different way to the feared object or situation.

Pain Relief – Diagnosed Long Term Pain

Hypnosis has been used for pain relief for centuries, and is often used for patients undergoing surgery if they are allergic to anaesthetics.

It is known, that by using hypnosis, the brain’s response to pain signals can be reduced and that you can learn new ways of managing your pain.  When you relax you feel less pain, and through hypnosis you can actually reduce the amount of pain you perceive.  The management of chronic pain can be helped greatly by learning self-hypnosis, a technique, which will help you learn to relax into the pain and let go of it.

Milton Erickson, one of the world’s leading authorities in the use of clinical hypnosis, used the techniques of self-hypnosis to manage his own chronic pain resulting from two bouts of polio.

Please note that you should always consult your doctor about the cause of the pain before seeking the help of a hypnotherapist.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

An Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder in which compulsive (i.e. repetitive and unwanted) thoughts or acts interfere with a person’s life.

They may start almost as a superstition in order to protect the person from a dreaded event.  Rather like avoiding the cracks in the pavements as a child, but for some this can develop into an obsessional pattern of behaviour which is intrusive and invariably distressing.  Although, there may be a sense of relief after going through this ritual, it can create further anxiety which in turn becomes a vicious circle.  Obsessive thoughts can lead to anxiety which can lead to a person performing rituals to relieve anxiety.

It is thought that one in forty of the population has some sort of OCD.

People can become obsessed with thoughts, ideas, images, and impulses which they cannot get out of their minds.  This in turn may lead to obsessional acts, based on these  constantly  recurring thoughts, which become stereotyped and repetitive behaviour patterns. This behaviour may not necessarily seem to be  purposeful  or completed at any time and can cause the person to feel so embarrassed about them that they cannot function easily in social situations.

There are various types and frequency of obsessional thoughts and acts.

Obsessional thoughts include: Contamination, Pathological doubt, Somatic concerns, Need for symmetry, Aggression and Sexual impulses.

Obsessional acts include: Checking, Washing, Counting, Asking/Confessing, Symmetry and Hoarding.

An OCD can be extremely detrimental in terms of a person’s everyday life, time-keeping, work and social life.  It also has a huge impact on the lives of their family and friends.

The onset of this condition will usually start in a person’s late teens or early  20s.  It can affect people from all walks of life.  At least a third of those people will have suffered from a stressful event, and one in three will have had a dramatic event prior to onset. Most sufferers will try and conceal this from family and friends.

Hypnotherapy, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)  and Emotional Freedom Technique ( EFT ) can help with this condition.  EFT can allow the client to substitute the tapping routine of this technique for the obsessive behaviour while helping to balance the Chi (the mind body harmony).  NLP will help the client to change the state and be able to visual a successful outcome to most situations. The Hypnotherapy will instil a feeling of calmness and tranquility and motivation and expectation to change.

Memory Enhancement

Hypnosis will help you to access long forgotten memories.  From the moment you are born, and perhaps even before you are born, you are forming images of everything you see, hear, smell and taste and touch.   All those memories are stored in your mind.  They are known as engrams.

By accessing that deeper part of you, you will find you can increase your powers of recall.  You will feel more in control of your thoughts and emotions.  You will have the ability to concentrate better and utilise the vast resources of the memory and the full intellectual powers of the subconscious mind.

Immune System Strengthening

Hypnotherapy is very powerful tool for strengthening the immune system.  By using the power of creative visualisation the client can see their body getting stronger and the antibodies increasing and growing in numbers.

It has been found that patients diagnosed with cancer are able to make their cancer therapy more positive and successful by the use of guided imagery and self-hypnosis.  Hypnotherapy incorporating guided imagery can greatly strengthen the immune system.  It is known as psychoneuroimmunology.   This can give a person a profound belief that they can recover and survive.

Through hypnosis they can get in touch with a deeper part of themselves, their life force and drive, which has helped them recover and overcome obstacles in the past.

Gastrointestinal Problems

We all carry a certain amount of stress and for some of us it could manifest as a headache, or a skin rash but many of us internalise our worries and find that we cannot digest or process our food properly.

Hypnosis has proved to be particularly beneficial for gastrointestinal problems, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, colitis and Crohn’s Disease.  Through hypnosis the gastric acid secretion can be both stimulated and inhibited according to the condition.

In a controlled study of ulcer patients with a one year follow up it was found that all the patients, treated with medication until the ulcer healed, had relapsed. Of those treated by hypnotherapy, it was found that only 53% had recurring problems.

It is known that gut problems are usually caused by stress, poor eating habits in terms of time and quality, and food intolerance.  Through hypnosis you can learn to stay calm on the inside, by being more relaxed and in control of your daily life and your eating habits and patterns.

Fertility & Childbirth

Approximately 15% of couple living in the United Kingdom have experienced ‘sub-fertility’

There may be physical, physiological, or biochemical reasons why that is so for some, but many will be diagnosed as having  ‘non-specific infertility’, as there seems to be no obvious reason why the couple cannot conceive.

Hypnotherapy can prove to be very successful for couples in this situation, and there is an expected success rate of 40-45% of live births within a year, after 4 to 10 sessions of hypnosis.

Many couples are coming to childbirth later in life. More now probably having lived their lives to the full in their twenties and some into their thirties. This can sometime cause concern for women, and men, thinking they have left it too late or may have compromised their fertility with high living.

One of the know factors about wanting to become pregnant is the 'Law of Reversed Affect'. Rather like trying to get to sleep - the more we think about it the more difficult it seems to get.

Once couple relax and just concentrate on living a happy healthy life they are probably more easily able to conceive. We have all heard stories of couples who stopped trying or adopted a child and then went on to have babies of their own.

A 1992 study found that women who undertook hypnotherapy  therapy experienced a higher conception rate as compared to those who only participated in  Invitro Fertilisation programmes.  These women also found they had decreased levels of depression and anxiety.  Hypnotherapy can be surprisingly and delightfully  successful for couple who want to conceive where there is no obvious physcial problem for either of them.

Hypnosis for childbirth is also very powerful.  The underlying theme of hypnotherapy is calmness, confidence and relaxation.  It will help the Mother relax and have a sense of peace and tranquility, which will pass through to the baby so that both feel more in harmony with each other.  The teaching of self-hypnosis and pain control will help the Mother and the partner breath through the birth, and shift the focus on to a successful and joyful birth. Sue has worked with many women who may have had a difficult or unpleasant and painful first birth. She helps them reframe their thinking and look forward to the arrival of their next child.

Eating Disorders – Anorexia & Bulimia

We all know that in order to survive we must eat.  In many cultures eating is not just about keeping ourselves alive, it is about being part of family or a group, sharing and showing hospitality.

Eating is a primal activity as we have to be able to suck when we are born in order to survive, we then hopefully bond with our Mother on the breast, and later we are often rewarded or comforted with food as young children. So it can be seen that food can relate to the emotions, the love of self and the love of others.

In people with eating disorders, their attitudes to food become distorted.  They are unable to treat food as an enjoyable part of life but start to see it as an enemy, a weapon or in some cases a best friend.  Eating or not eating is no longer a response to physical hunger but is driven by emotional needs.  Their relationship to food starts to dominate their life, whether they starve themselves or eat uncontrollably.

Attitudes to body shape also become abnormal. Getting and staying thin can turn into an obsession and people can lose their ability to judge their body size accurately.

Eating disorders are complex, but it is generally accepted they are an expression of underlying emotional problems. Society’s obsession with slimness and physical fitness also plays a large part, putting pressure on the young to conform to the ideal body size regardless of their own shape and bone structure.

Anorexia and Bulimia are often seen to be a person's own area of control. A part of their lives that no one else can control or a way of getting their family or loved ones to give them more attention. Thereby controlling their environment and family.

A combination of  Hypnotherapy,  Neuro- Linguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy(CBT) and Emotional Freedom Technique( EFT) will gently help to reframe the attitude towards eating, give more motivation to improve health and fitness and to resolve any inner conflict.  It will also instil a sense of calmness, peace and personal security to enable the person to move forward and grow stronger at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for them.

Sue uses very motivational techniques to help the person focus on their goals and their strengths. Getting them to tap into their creativity and driving force. Moving their lives forward  finding independence and freedom and letting go of unwanted patterns or obsessions.

Depression

We may have all suffered with a level of depression at some stage in our lives depending on our environments and our physiology.

We do not always recognise the symptoms of depression until it has really altered our outlook on life.   The symptoms may start with a loss of interest and enjoyment, or a loss of activity, reduced energy. There may be a sense of reduced concentration or reduced self-esteem and confidence.  Or feelings of guilt and unworthiness, disturbed sleep, a pessimistic view of the future or even a diminished appetite.

A person with depression may lack motivation, be able to keep on top of their lives, work, cleaning, tidying etc. Often the combination of the lack of sleep, procrastination and the clutter they live with stops them from enjoying life. It may affect their libido or interest in their partners or their family and friends. They just feel safer and more relaxed when they are alone. For many these feelings and behaviours can creep up on us.

Those suffering with Chronic Depression may store ideas of self harm and have a great sense of despair.  A seriously depressed person is often not able to communicate or relate to the people who are important in their lives.  They feel disassociated from reality. They may even change in physical appearance as they are not able to project their personality or power.

Depression may be endogenous, come from within, or be a personality trait or learned behaviour.  It could even be triggered by food intolerance, alcohol or substance abuse or an anxiety disorder. It can also be seasonal.

Hypnotherapy will help the client to have a greater sense of motivation, self-belief, energy and optimism.    You will find you have more ability to get things done and take control of your life again.  You will feel fitter and more energetic.

Anti-depressants and psychotherapy can mean long term dependency for many.

The wonderful thing about hypnotherapy is that it can help long-term sufferers, without any of the damaging side effects.  It is unthreatening and extremely comforting and allows people to find the brighter side of themselves.  They can feel as if they are coming out of the darkness into the light.

Confidence & Self-Esteem

Our behaviour and our feelings about ourselves, is often based on the way we are treated by the people who are important in our lives.  If we are living in difficult or unhappy circumstances, or have grown up in a harsh environment, or have been bullied or abused in some way it can have a profound affect on our self-esteem. Over time, we can develop very negative feelings and have low expectations of how we should be treated and what we can expect from life.

Fear of failure for some can be extremely immobilising emotional condition.  People can fear that they will not be able to accomplish anything because they may feel that have failed at things in the past. We can become victims of past programming.

Self-esteem may also suffer from the way in which people perceive themselves physically. Some people may view themselves as not good enough and always expect to pull the short straw.

It is known that what the mind can conceive it can achieve and hypnotherapy will give you a greater sense of self-belief, a greater sense of self-reliance and acceptance.  It will give you more confidence about who you are and the way you take up space.

Hypnotherapy will allow you to access the higher part of you, which knows that you have that ability, that driving force that you were born with.  From the moment you were born, this is the force that helped to survive and learn things for  yourself.  The therapy is extremely motivational and will help you identify your own strengths and weaknesses in a clear and objective way.  It will help you tap into your creativity and your driving force. It will give you strength and motivation to be the person you want to be.

Bereavement

Coming to terms with the loss of a loved one or friend, or even a pet, is difficult  for everyone.  There is no set time in which you can recover from grief. We all deal with grief  in different ways.  Some may  feel that they will never get over it.

Most will go through a range of feelings from disbelief, anger, guilt and loneliness.
Some of people deal with these feelings by  shutting  their memories and sadness away and making  themselves as busy as possible, while others may need to talk about the one who has died as much as they can, for as long as others will listen.

However, most of us do need to express our grief in some way and try to come to terms with it.  We may need to rationalise it, accept that death is an inevitable end to life, learn to let go of the past and move into the next stage of our life.

Through hypnosis you can take yourself down into your inner mind, your inner world where you can explore old and forgotten memories, find hidden treasures, that may comfort you and reassure you.  You may even feel that you can talk to the person you lost and ask for their help or guidance.  This often allows people to feel much more at peace with themselves.

The underlying theme of hypnotherapy is to give the client a feeling of calmness and safety.  It will help them feel stronger and have belief in their ability to carry on and rebuild  their lives or change direction in a way that suits their needs and situation. Maybe help them come to terms with their own mortality.

Sue Turner has experienced bereavement herself several times. Her husband died when she was quite young. She believes that bereavement is very individual and we will all need to grieve in our own way.  A lot of it is about learning  to live our own lives without our special person or pet in it. The counselling and therapy she offers is mainly about helping people get back on their feet and learn to live in different more independent way with a sense of hope. Being able to see life as a long adventure meeting different people and experiencing different ways of seeing along the way.

Anxiety & Panic Attacks

We all live with a level of anxiety and for some it gives us drive and motivation.  But for others it can feel like an overwhelming state of negative thought which seems to feed on itself. Very sensitive and intelligent people are often more prone to anxiety, as they often worry about anything and everything. Their brains are looking for fodder to feed on.

If you have ever suffered from spontaneous feelings of anxiety or fear you may be experiencing a panic attack.  You may have had symptoms such as:

Shortness of breath or smothering sensation

Dizziness or unsteady feeling

Heart palpitations or rapid heartbeat

Trembling or shaking

Sweating

Choking

Nausea or abdominal distress

Feelings of being detached or out of touch with your body

Numbness or tingling sensations

Flushes or chills

Chest pain or discomfort

Fear or dying

These feelings of anxiety and fear can feel so physical that it can often lead people to believe that they are having a heart attack.

The reason they feel so physical is because when we become anxious or afraid, the adrenaline released into our body causes it to go into the fear flight or fight mode. The adrenaline sends blood to the legs so that we can get ready to run if we are in danger but that can make our legs feel very wobbly.  It freezes the blood supply to the stomach so that we cannot eat. It can give us that jittery anxious feeling in the abdomen or the chest.  It causes  blood to  rush to the head so we can make decisions about whether to stay and fight or run. This can make us feel dizzy.  It will cause the heart to beat much faster and the breathing to become  more shallow so that our body is getting revved up like an engine ready to run.

Anxiety attacks can start at any time in your life.  Some anxious people may have learned an element of anxiety if they grew up in an anxious household but for others it can often occur after a life changing event or a long period of difficulty or emotional upset.   Many people might cope through times of great difficulty and then are surprised to find that they start to feel anxious after the event, even though they may have thought they had dealt with it.

Many people experience what is known as the fear of the fear.

Hypnotherapy will help you learn how to take control of these feelings, learn to relax and get things in their true perspective.  You will learn how to slow your body down and feel more in charge of the situation.

Self-hypnosis is taught as part of the treatment.

Addictions

It is considered that many people with addictions may be  seekers, who are searching for their creative expression or their spirituality.  For some their addiction may be a comfort or a reward that has become very much conditioned into their daily routine. For others it may be a way of burying the past or numbing unwanted memories.

We can all be addicted to ritual and behaviour patterns but some of us feel the need for more stimulation, in the form of substance abuse or a behaviour pattern that stimulates excitement, for example gambling.

Psychological research shows that a lot of unhealthy addictive behaviour originates in the form of compensation for lack of love, approval, and creative expression. Hypnotherapy will give you a greater feeling of self-esteem, self-belief, safety and security to allow you to make positive changes that you want in your life.

By using a balance of  Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnotherapy, Sue can show you how to break associations and overcome addictions and let go of unwanted patterns of behaviour. Depending on the root of the addiction other therapies such as CBT (Conitive Behavioural Therapy) may be incorporated into the work. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is often also taught to clients to help them break habits.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) will help you reframe your perception of yourself and your ability to succeed and achieve.  You will focus on  success.  Hypnotherapy will help you to communicate with deeper side of yourself.  To listen to that all knowing side that is aware of your abilities and creativity.  It will help break old habit patterns and allow you to move into a new healthier happy way of life.  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy will help you address and understand your patterns of behaviour and find new ways of coping.  Emotional Freedom Technique(EFT) will help to break the state, balance the mind body harmony and give you the belief that you can change.

The therapeutic approach that is used by Sue Turner is extremely motivational so that the clients feels very empowered by the freedom from the addiction or habit and puts their energy into achieving positive goals.
