FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are answers to some common questions about hypnotherapy and what it entails. If you have any further questions or would like to discuss something with Sue, please do not hesitate to contact her.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a carefully planned programme of treatment, which can help you overcome physical, mental and emotional difficulties in your life. It is a way of opening your mind to show you how to make changes in yourself for your positive and advantageous benefit. It is a very gentle, easy process, which does not push you in any direction against your will. It is also very beneficial for opening up your creativity and intellect and finding new ways of learning and seeing.

What Hypnotherapy is Not

Stage and TV shows can often give the wrong image of hypnosis, sometimes suggesting a loss of control and dignity. A qualified hypnotherapist  must follow a code of ethics which can be seen on request. A client should always be able to expect absolute confidentiality and trust from his/her therapist. The main objective of a  hypnotherapist is to ensure that the client greatly benefits from each session, and leaves feeling much more positive and optimistic. The work will include coaching and counselling, often some psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)  and  NLP Neuro Linguistic Therapy (NLP).

If a client has any concerns about hypnosis they will be reassured by Sue, who will spend a lot of time helping them to feel at ease and understand how it works. All clients are taught the art of Self-Hypnosis.

Hypnosis is often described as relaxation asking the client to give 'Passive Attention'.

What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Clinical Hypnosis is a means of using hypnosis to treat a variety of medical and psychological problems. It is estimated that 85% of people respond very well to hypnosis. It often succeeds where other, more conventional, methods of treatment have not produced the desired results. When carried out by a professionally trained and skilled hypnotherapist, the benefits can be long lasting and often permanent. It is completely natural and safe, with no harmful side effects. NICE now recognise the effacacious benefits of hypnosis and the medical and dental profession are very receptive to this complementary therapy.

What is the Difference Between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is an altered state of mind.  Hypnotherapy can help someone use this altered state of mind to their positive advantage. Hypnotherapy is a combination of counselling, coaching, NLP, Hypnosis and relaxation. Sue often incorporates CBT and Gestalt into her work.

What is Self-Hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is a very beneficial tool that can help you stay relaxed and calm regardless of any situation. It is a way of going deeper into your inner mind and understanding yourself better and learning to be at peace with yourself. Self-hypnosis will teach you how to relax your body so well, that you can relax your conscious mind.  The conscious mind is the part we are more familiar with, where we have the ability to know and understand, remember, dream, love and feel, analyse, rationalise and intellectualise.  When  you relax your conscious mind you also relax the critical facto, which rather like a subliminal questioning about everything you do.  When the critical factor relaxes, it is as if a door opens into the subconscious, so that you can go deeper into relaxation.  By exploring the subconscious mind you can become aware of your true potential and ability to achieve anything you want to achieve.  You can utilise the vast resources of the memory and tap into the intellectual powers of the subconscious.

What can Hypnotherapy do for you?

The aim of hypnotherapy is to help you realise and achieve your goals and  potentials.  It will help you deal with stress, overcome fears and anxieties and help you feel much more positive and optimistic about your life. Through hypnotherapy you can learn time management,  assertiveness and how to project yourself and achieve you goals.  It will help you overcome obstacles and see problems in a different way. It helps you tap in to your true driving force and believe in yourself.

What is the Sensation of Hypnotherapy?

It is a completely safe and harmless therapy. It is not a state of deep sleep, unconsciousness or unawareness. You retain and enhance control of your own mind while in hypnosis. You will hear and know everything that is going on and will not do or say anything that you would not want to. Many people will drift between different levels of trance. For most purposes, the light trance state is sufficient for successful therapy. Deep hypnotic trance is a state of profound physical and mental calm, inner peace, contentment and happiness in which awareness may be vastly increased and the memory powerfully enhanced. It is also very beneficial for the immune system and healing.

The Treatment

For hypnosis you will either sit up or lie back in comfortable recliner chair so that your body is completely safe and comfortable. You will then be encouraged to relax your body and conscious mind.  In this state your subconscious mind is more open to the positive suggestion you want.
You will emerge from the trance comfortably and easily on direction from the hypnotherapist and you would always come out of the trance quickly if it were necessary for you to do so.
The core of the work used in hypnotherapy is known as ego strengthening, so that the client will always leave each session, feeling more positive about themselves.  Sue uses a lot of motivational hypnosis and goals setting to enable her clients to move their lives forward.
With certain issues, it is beneficial for the client to regress back in time, under hypnosis, as this can help unearth the root of deeply embedded patterns of behaviour.

Past life regression can also be very therapeutic and creative.  Neither of these therapies are used in the first session and Sue would always discuss and explain them first and obtain consent from the client.

Goals and Motivation

The wonderful thing about hypnosis is that it always helps you change your outlook for the better.  Through hypnosis, you can discover treasures that lie deep inside you.  Maybe, an interest or a passion that you had in earlier life could be rekindled.  Or you may find a deeper understanding of yourself and your abilities to achieve things that you have always wanted to achieve.
Sue uses very motivational hypnosis.  She asks all her clients to bring with them a list of goals.  This helps to start focusing the mind before they come for hypnotherapy.  These goals can be short or long term goals but must be realistic and achievable.  They can be practical day to day goals, like jobs that need to be done at work or home, they can be material, spiritual, relationship, creative, travel goals.  Anything at all, that you would like to achieve in your lifetime.
If you have had any major life-changing events, hypnosis can help you come to terms with these in a gentle and comforting way.  Perhaps enabling you to understand yourself better AND YOUR ABILITY TO SURVIVE AND GROW.

Number of Treatments

Smoking cessation is one main session (at least 3 hours) followed by a free optional follow up one week later when the Art of Self Hypnosis is taught.

It is advisable to expect 3 or 4 sessions for the treatment of most other issues.  However, confidence building and self-esteem could benefit very well, from just one session. There would normally be a review of the client’s feelings about the session at the beginning of each subsequent session.

Sue will advise on a plan of treatment at the initial appointment.
