Winter is a time for hibernation, keeping warm, reserving strength.

The pressures of Christmas and New Year can sometime create anxious thoughts which can get in the way of sleep and make us feel restless.

Sleep is hugely important for all of us, as lack of it causes physical and mental problems.  If we are tired we won’t feel like exercising and become more sedentary. We are more likely to crave comfort food and caffeine, sugar and alcohol when we are tired.  Lack of sleep can cause anxiety and affect our productivity and concentration.

Over the last few years medical research has shown that we have a biological clock, known as a *Circadian clock in our brain.  It is also thought that all our organs, glands and cells have such clocks.  These all need to be synchronized with the main clock in the brain for us to feel mentally and physically co-ordinated.  It has also been proven that people who work nights or get a lot of jet lag from flying are more prone to serious health issues.
